Rotation # 749
Purdue -15.5 over Memphis (loss)
Purdue has already been challenged by its early-season schedule, with a win on the road against #8 Alabama. Memphis, on the other hand, has yet to get going, coming off a loss in its own building against UNLV. Today’s game is on a neutral court in the Bahamas. One thing that will be noticeable immediately is the decent size advantage the Boilermakers have over the Tigers. The Tigers are a guard-heavy team that will sacrifice size for quickness and speed on offense. The problem is that the offense hasn’t gotten going yet, so you’re left with a vulnerable defensive team that can get bullied in the paint. Memphis head coach, Penny Hardaway, is trying to take his team to another 1st-place finish in the American Conference. Still, it will be a challenge, as nobody on the current roster has played together, as they are all transfer players. Purdue, on the other hand, returns 4 of their top 5 players from a year ago. Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer are veteran guards. Trey Kaufman-Renn and newcomer Oscar Cluff are great on the boards and should use their size tonight for buckets in the paint. Anything can happen on a neutral court in the Bahamas. It’s impossible to know whether players focus on the beaches or the game in a non-conference tune-up before conference play, but the talent gap is large enough to warrant a double-digit spread. If UNLV could crack the Memphis defense at will, the most efficient offense in the country should be able to do so. Take Purdue.
