Shane Beamer enters his sixth season at South Carolina after the Gamecocks finished 4-8 overall and 1-7 in SEC play in 2025. The Gamecocks return LaNorris Sellers at quarterback, add TCU offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, and bring back several key offensive pieces. Sellers remains a significant rushing threat, Matt Fuller returns in the backfield, and Texas transfer Christian Clark joins after averaging 30 rushing yards per game last season. At receiver, Nyck Harbor returns after making 30 catches, and Purdue transfer Nitro Tuggle joins the receiving corps after recording 34 receptions. Brady Hunt returns at tight end after making 21 catches, while Mazeo Bennett provides another returning option in the passing game.
Up front, the offensive line features considerable starting experience. Jacarrius Peak made 13 starts last season, while Sedrick Sarratt and Carter Miller each made nine and Hank Purvis made seven. In addition, Josiah Thompson returns to the program but is expected to miss the 2026 season due to injury.
On defense, Clayton White returns for his sixth season as defensive coordinator, and South Carolina brings back six of its top eleven tacklers from last season. In the front seven, Fred “JayR” Johnson and Dylan Stewart return after making 12 and 11 starts, respectively, while leading tackler Justin Okoronkwo made eight. Update (Sept. 30): DE Dylan Stewart remains suspended indefinitely following multiple incidents against Alabama, including throwing a punch at an opposing player. Stewart will miss the Kentucky game and has no timetable for his return. Illinois transfer Tomiwa Durojaiye joins the defensive front after making nine starts last season, while Alabama transfer Kelby Collins and Tennessee transfer Caleb Herring add depth. Moving to the secondary, Peyton Williams returns after making 12 starts, and Judge Collier returns after making eight, while Kentucky transfer Quay’sheed Scott joins the defensive backfield after making 12 starts last season.
In special teams, Matthew Smiley takes over as special teams coordinator. Vicari Swain returns as an experienced punt returner after scoring three punt-return touchdowns last season, while Nyck Harbor brings kickoff-return experience. Mason Love returns at punter, while Upton Bellenfant joins the program at placekicker.
Overall, South Carolina enters 2026 with Sellers providing continuity at quarterback, considerable starting experience along the offensive line, and six of its top eleven tacklers returning on defense. The Gamecocks also added experienced Power Conference transfers at several positions. Even with a new offensive coordinator and turnover at several key spots, the roster still offers a mix of continuity and change in 2026.
