Bret Bielema enters his sixth season at Illinois after a 9-4 campaign in 2025, giving the Illini consecutive winning seasons after finishing 10-3 in 2024. Illinois must replace leading receiver Hank Beatty after he departs for the NFL. East Carolina transfer Katin Houser joined the program at quarterback, and Barry Lunney Jr. returns as offensive coordinator. Update (Oct. 13): QB Katin Houser suffered a broken hand against Michigan State on October 10 and is expected to miss an extended period. Freshman Michael Clayton II replaced him and threw two touchdown passes, including the game-winner in overtime. Running backs Ca’Lil Valentine and Aidan Laughery return, while Kaden Feagin has moved from running back to tight end. Update (Oct. 5): RB Ca’Lil Valentine suffered a season-ending right-leg injury against Purdue and will undergo surgery. Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement return in the receiving corps, while Florida Atlantic transfer Jayshon Platt joins the group. The offensive line returns full-time starter Brandon Henderson, who made 12 starts last season. Colorado State transfer Christian Martin, Wisconsin transfer Jake Renfro, and junior-college transfer Maika Matelau join the group. Platt missed the season’s opening portion with an injury but is expected to return.

Bobby Hauck began the season as defensive coordinator but was relieved of his duties after four games, with Roger Cooper taking over defensive responsibilities. Illinois returns four of its top eleven tacklers from last season, including leading tackler Matthew Bailey, while four of its top five tacklers have departed. The front seven faces considerable turnover, with linebacker James Kreutz the only returning top eleven tackler in the group after making one start last season. Jacksonville State transfer Darrell Prater and Penn transfer Carter Janki join the front seven, while Matthew Bailey, Tanner Heckel, and Jaheim “Juice” Clarke return in the secondary.

Chris Hurd takes over as special teams coordinator. Washington transfer Ethan Moczulski joins the program at placekicker, while Lars Rau takes over at punter after not recording statistics last season. Illinois State transfer Eddie Kasper joins the program as a punt-return option, and Ca’Lil Valentine entered the season with kickoff-return experience.

Illinois entered 2026 with a new quarterback, considerable turnover in the defensive front seven, and only four of its top eleven tacklers returning. Houser’s extended absence and Valentine’s season-ending loss have created significant challenges for the offense, while Hauck’s departure has brought additional change to the defensive coaching staff.
