Jeff Lebby returns for his third season in Starkville under significant pressure after going 1-7 in the SEC last year (and winless the year before). Multiple conference wins are likely required for him to return in 2027.  Kamario Taylor takes over at quarterback for the departed Blake Shapen, while Fluff Bothwell returns as the lead back. Also returning is Anthony Evans, who led the team with 67 catches last year. The Bulldogs added Missouri transfer receiver Marquis Johnson, and the offensive line returns center Canon Boone while hoping Blake Steen can stay healthy.

Zach Arnett takes over the defensive coordinator role in what is now his second stint in Starkville. He faces the challenge of replacing many players who graduated from a season ago, including the team’s top three tacklers. On the defensive line, Trevion Williams and Kalvin Dinkins return, while linebacker Zakari Tillman is the most experienced of the group, and the team will need others to step up. In the secondary, Kelley Jones and Isaac Smith return, and the Bulldogs are high on Iowa State transfer Quentin Taylor, Oklahoma transfer Kendal Dolby and LSU transfer Jardin Gilbert. They can’t wait to see how five-star freshman Bralan Womack performs.

Kyle Ferrie returns as the primary place kicker, as does punter Ethan Pulliam. Anthony Evans will again handle punt returns and look to get more reps on kick returns. Mississippi State has enough talent and depth to improve in SEC play, but wins are all that matter. The coaching staff must deliver results, or the program will look very different next year.
