Bret Bielema returns for his sixth season in Champaign after guiding the Illini to consecutive winning seasons (10-3 in 2024 and 9-4 in 2025). Offensive coordinator Barry Lunney will try to get ECU transfer Katin Houser up to speed to lead the offense in 2026. The Illini running back room returns, with Ca’Lil Valentine and Aidan Laughery complementing each other as they carry the workload. Kaden Feagin has converted to a tight end, but we can be sure there will be short-yardage packages for him with his 260-pound frame. Receiver Hank Beatty has moved on to the NFL with the Titans. Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement had productive years, and the Illini are high on FAU transfer Jayshon Platt. Illinois has significant turnover on the offensive line, welcoming in Colorado State transfer Christian Martin, Wisconsin transfer Jake Renfro, and top-ranked JUCO interior lineman transfer Maika Matelau, in addition to Brandon Henderson returning as the only full-time starter from a season ago.

The Illini will welcome new defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck. Top tackler Matthew Bailey returns, but the defense will be in a rebuilding year with four of the five top tacklers from a year ago moving on. The front seven will be an early-season concern as they break in new starters at every position. The secondary, led by Bailey, is talented, with Jaheim “Juice” Clarke returning, and Illini fans are excited to see the No. 1-ranked JUCO cornerback transfer Jakwon Morris take the field.

New special teams coach Chris Hurd will have the difficult task of fielding a new place kicker, punter, and punt returner. FAU transfer Jayshon Platt will compete with Ca’Lil Valentine as the primary kick returner. Bret Bielema is an outstanding coach, but with a new quarterback and significant turnover on defense, 2026 will be a key test of the program’s depth and development.
